SPEECH AT THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE PHOTO EXHIBITION ON THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF CHINA-UNIDO COOPERATION

By ZHONG Shan

International Trade Representative (ministerial level) and Vice Minister of Commerce,

People’s Republic of China

May 22, 2013, Vienna

Respectable Director General Kandeh K. Yumkella,

Your Excellencies,

Distinguished Guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good Afternoon!

On behalf of the Ministry of Commerce of China, I would like to thank you for joining us in the Photo Exhibition on the 40th Anniversary of China-UNIDO Cooperation.

Since its establishment in 1966, UNIDO has lived up to its mission, and made significant contribution to helping developing countries realize sustainable industrial development. In the past decade, UNIDO has been advocating green industry, encouraging international exchanges and cooperation on environment and energy, and has made many significant achievements in the three main thematic areas, namely poverty reduction through productive activities, trade capacity building and energy and environment, taking us another step closer to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. China highly appreciates UNIDO’s efforts and its accomplishment.

For a long time the Chinese government has maintained close cooperation with UNIDO in industrial development, which proves to be very fruitful. This exhibition summarizes our achievements in the past 40 years. We can see in these pictures some cooperation results in energy conservation and emission reduction in industry, standard formulation, trade capacity building, clean and renewable energy, and environmental protection. Some pictures also show China and UNIDO working with other developing countries under the framework of South-South Cooperation on renewable energy, investment promotion, trade facilitation and environmental protection.

Currently, the global economy is in a period of profound adjustments, with manufacturing shifting faster across the world, and real economy including industry gaining importance. Developed countries have adopted the strategy of reindustrialization, while developing countries, especially LDCs urgently need to speed up industrialization for more jobs and faster social and economic growth. As UNIDO embraces new opportunities for development, it will also face more arduous tasks. The Chinese government will, as always, staunchly support UNIDO in helping other developing countries realize sustainable industrial development. We will also further our practical cooperation with UNIDO under the framework of South-South Cooperation, share China’s development experience and technology with other developing countries so that we can achieve common development.

Thank you.
