Organizational Context
• The Young Professionals Programme (YPP) has been established to infuse a steady flow of talented and motivated young professionals into the Organization, to facilitate succession planning and knowledge retention, while providing an opportunity to the selected young professionals (YPs) to launch a challenging and rewarding professional career in an international development organization.
• YPs will initially be recruited for positions in the areas of Strategic Research, Agri-business Development, Trade Capacity-building, Investment and Technology Promotion, Energy and Climate Change, Industrial Policy and Private Sector Development as well as Environmental Management including matters related to the Montreal Protocol. During the first year of their appointment, the YPs will be anchored organizationally in a branch where they are expected to make clearly defined contributions towards the branch’s work programme, while at the same time having an overview of the Organization’s work.
• Upon recruitment and for the entire period of employment under the programme, the YPs will be under the authority of the relevant divisions and branches to which they are assigned. The Human Resource Management Branch (HRM) will be responsible for the overall coordination of the programme.
Main Functions
• The YP will undergo on-the-job training in important aspects of technical cooperation and will be exposed to each phases of the project cycle. They will also undertake training in Procurement Services Unit, Human Resource Management and Financial Services Branches. They will also follow a number of training programmes in areas such as project design, formulation and implementation; logical framework analysis (LFA) and results-based management (RBM). In addition, they could be assigned to other branches within the division in order to broaden their experience and exposure to the division’s work.
• Depending on the availability of resources, YPs will accompany senior professionals on missions in the field as part of on-the-job training. Subject to the exigencies of service, YPs may, after completion of one year of service at Headquarters, be laterally assigned to a field duty station for a minimum period of one year.
• Following their exposure to various functions of the organization, the YPs would be called upon to undertake the following specific assignments related to supporting project development and project implementation of the (technical) Branch they are assigned:
• (1) Project Development: Assists in the formulation of project documents, in line with the guidelines and procedures governing the delivery of UNIDO services, and in obtaining internal approval. These include researching and analysing specific subject matters and making recommendations for management decision making;
• (2) Project Implementation: Assists in preparing the necessary inputs (consultant job descriptions, terms of reference, training arrangements, equipment specifications,), in monitoring progress, in ensuring that the agreed outputs are delivered on time and at the right level of quality, and in reporting internally and externally on project progress;
• (3)Global Forum activities: Assists in the preparation and organization of studies, technical papers and other documents required for expert group meetings, conferences, seminars and other forums held both internally and externally.
• Performs other related duties and assignments as required by the Branch in which the YP is anchored.
Required Competencies
• Planning and Organizational Skills; Analysis and Problem Solving abilities; excellent Inter-Personal skills; ability to work in a Team; Cultural Sensitivity; advanced Report Writing skills; excellent Verbal and Written Communication skills.
Minimum Requirements
• Age: Be not more than 30 years old at the time of application.
• Education: A Masters degree (or equivalent) in development economics, engineering, sciences or other relevant discipline.
• Experience: A minimum of 1 year working experience in industry, research institution or other areas relevant to UNIDO’s mandate. Candidates in the 28 to 30 years age bracket should have a PhD or a minimum of 3 years working experience and a Masters degree (or equivalent).
• Languages: Be proficient in both written and spoken English; knowledge of another official language will be an asset
